Genocide Defined
In 1948, at the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the crime of Genocide, they came up with five different acts genocide can be defined in. However, to be a genocidal event only one of the five acts has to be true in the attempt to destroy a national, ethnic, or religious group.
An act of killing members of a specific group is an act of genocide. In Bosnia, between 1992 and 1995, 200,000 lives where lost. These lives where lost through many different ways. From the beginning to the end Sarajevo was under siege and blockaded from delivering food. Mass murders where happenings, for example, hundred were forced to the edge of the cliff and either shot or pushed off the edge. People were abused in concentration camps, a long with woman beings raped.
The UN also says that causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the same group is an act of genocide. The Serbs deprived the Bosnian s and Croats of the fundamentally necessaries. They also sent them to their concentration camps, where they were abused. Mass executions where also help by Serbs. Many of the muslin women were raped or sent to be sex slaves. All of these acts alone have genocide written all over them. However, Croats and Muslims held Serbs up in concentration camps of their own.
Deliberately inflecting on a specific group conditions of which bring about physical destruction is considered genocide. The Serbs prevented aid from reaching the Croats and Bosnian's. Do to the lack of food, the average Sarajevan lost about 30 lbs. The UN intended to send 81,948 tons of food into Sarajevo, but because of the Serbs these resources never made it to their destination.
Imposing measures intended to prevent births within a specific group in genocide. The Serbs separated the men and women, this alone would have stopped the spread of the one race. They also forced the muslin women to have Serb children. These children where to later be taken in by orphanages. All of this was done with one goal, the end of the Muslims (Bosnian Genocide).
